Hike: Torrey Pines State Reserve

Torrey Pines State Reserve is an amazing area that captures the unique outdoor experience. Torrey Pines are a very rare breed of pine tree that naturally grow at the reserve. Along with these beautiful giants is an array of about 330 different plants in the reserve; some of whom are endangered and may be gone within the next 50 years in non-protected land areas. Between the plants, trees, and animals, Torrey Pines State Reserve is a unique place and no San Diego resident should miss out on the chance to visit such a rare beauty.

Please carpool if you can.

Meeting: We will be meeting at the bathrooms location, in the LOWER PARKING LOT, BY THE PAY BOOTHS.

Distance: About 5 miles total

Difficulty: Easy/Moderate

Hike Time: About 3 hours

Be sure to bring: 2 Liters of WATER; Good shoes for walking; Snacks; Hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen

Directions: Exit interstate 5 at Carmel Valley Road. Drive 1.5 miles west to the coast highway (signed Camino del Mar to the north and North Torrey Pines Road to the south). Go left and proceed 0.8 miles south to the Torrey Pines State Reserve parking lot on the right (FEE CHARGED) or find a parking spot for free along the coast highway.

Course Description: A fun and challenging fitness experience that explores our beautiful SD County trails and surrounding areas. This course will introduce safe hiking on terrain that will progress from easy and moderate throughout the semester. Hikes will typically range from an easy 3 mile trail to a more difficult 8-mile trek.  Adventurers will learn about what they are seeing, such as the plants and animals, but also what they are not seeing, such as the people that called the area home, thousands of years ago.

Participants will explore various hiking skills, health facts, “Leave No Trace” methods, and how to enjoy the outdoors in a safe way.  Please note class schedule may change due to weather conditions.

*The start and end time may change due to the specific hikes. Please check with the office/instructor.
